CLEVELAND - White County officials have begun the process of seeking ways to relieve the crowded conditions at the county detention center.

County commissioners, Sheriff Neal Walden and the county's chief financial officer, Vickie Neikirk, met recently with architect and planner Larry Goldberg.

Goldberg shared some preliminary ideas on how his company, that specializes in detention facilities, could help the county develop a plan to add more beds to the current facility and possibility make it more efficient. Goldberg said there's a big job ahead, because they want to look at the current building design and integrate it into an expansion project.

The commissioners want to get some ideas about expanding the facility along with doing some additional capital improvements through the use of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) money. Also the county is looking at using the money it now spends to house prisoners in other counties to help offset the cost of upgrades.
