BOCA RATON FL - Allen Doyle of LaGrange, Georgia, used three birdies in a row to get within two shots of the lead after the first round of the Champions Tour's Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Florida.

Doyle started on the back nine and didn't get under par until a birdie at the 18th hole. Then he birdied Numbers two, three, and four in succession to get to 4-under, where he finished with a 68.

He was two back of coleaders Mark McNulty and Jerry Pate. Seven others, including Bobby Wadkins, had five-under totals.

He was one of six with 68s, joining Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite among others.

The tournament is being played on the 6,749-yard, par 72 The Old Course at Broken Sound.

Larry Nelson of Marietta, Georgia, couldn't get anything going, settling for an eight-over par 80.
