Franklin County girls win 8-AAA title; secure berth in AAA state tourney (2/5)

WATKINSVILLE -- Franklin County wrapped the Region 8-AAA regular season title and an automatic berth into the Class AAA state playoffs with a 70-53 win over Oconee County Tuesday night.

The regular season champion receives an automatic berth into the semifinals of next week's Region Tournament. It is the ninth straight season the Lady Lions have advanced to the state playoffs.

The Lady Lions (23-1, 8-1 in region) were pushed in the first quarter leading the Lady Warriors just 25-23. But Franklin used a 16-7 second to open up a 41-30 halftime lead and then cruised in the second half.

Ashley Harris poured in 21 points to lead Franklin County. Melissa Bowman added 20 for the Lady Lions.

Darby Rogers had a game-high 22 points to lead Oconee County.
