CLARKESVILLE - Authorities are having a difficult time identifying the man who was struck and killed by a train in Habersham County earlier this week.

Sheriff DeRay Fincher said there was no identification on the body, adding that missing persons records are being checked. However, he said there are no reports of anyone, locally, matching the description of the victim.

Fincher said investigators are checking missing persons reports from other areas and also will be checking a database of fingerprints in hopes of learning the man's identity.

As for a description, Fincher would only say that the body is that of a white male. He said there was no identification "whatsoever" on the body when it was discovered near Alto Tuesday night.

Fincher would not say whether it was a freight train that struck the man or the the Amtrak Crescent, the passenger train that runs between Washington and New Orleans twice a day. However, AcccessNorthGa.com has confirmed with Amtrak officials in Washington that the Crescent's run to the northeast out of Gainesville and Atlanta was delayed about four hours Tuesday night because of the incident.
