GAINESVILLE - Former Gainesville City Manager Bryan Shuler will apparently collect six months severance pay after resigning last month following allegations of sexual harassment.

Shuler's employment agreement states that there will be no severance pay if he "voluntarily" resigns.

"In the event the Employee voluntarily resigns his position with the City," the clause reads, "then the Employee shall give the city two months (60) written notice in advance, unless the parties otherwise agree. The severance pay agreement...shall not apply to a voluntary resignation."

In a letter dated Nov. 17, Mayor Myrtle Fugueras wrote Shuler "Under the terms of your employment contract, you will receive six months of aggregate salary and continued benefit coverage. Included in this compensation is your monthly car allowance."

Figueras went on to tell Shuler in the letter "Upon completion of the severance period, you will be paid for your accrued vacation leave. At present that leave accrual is capped at 300 hours."

Shuler - who was making $102,000 a year plus $600 a month car allowance - resigned Nov. 13 after the allegations surfaced and following a number of official and unofficial meetings among city council members.

At the time he stepped down, it appeared to be voluntary. His resignation letter said he was leaving to take care of aging parents and eventually seek employment elsewhere.
