Det. Sgt. J.D. Gille said Scott Rutledge, 44; Roderick Gray, 43; and Ralph Callahan III, 36, all of Atlanta, Georgia, were arrested and charged with forgery on Wednesday. Rutledge and Callahan were charged with forgery in the first degree; Gray with forgery in the second degree.
Sgt. Gille says the trio went to the Hamilton State Bank branch located on Georgia Highway 211 in Braselton, where Rutledge cashed a check and left the bank with a certain amount of money. Subsequently, he says, Gray and Callahan went inside the bank to conduct the same transaction. A bank employee became suspicious because the checks presented were from a company based in Hoschton that has an account with the bank.
Gille says when the suspects were interviewed, Gray was found in possession of a check from the same business which were later found to be forgeries.
He added Rutledge, Gray and Callahan claim that they are homeless men from Atlanta who had been approached by two unknown men, who drove them to Braselton and promised to give them a certain amount of money in return for cashing the checks. The investigation to identify and arrest the two individuals who drove Rutledge, Gray and Callahan from Atlanta to Braselton is ongoing.
Sgt. Gille says this is not the first time such a scheme has surfaced in Braselton and he knows of other similar instances in metro Atlanta.
