UNDATED - Trailer manufacturer Great Dane has announced it will close its nearly 100 year-old Savannah plant early next year.

The January closing will leave 270 workers without jobs.

Company executives blamed the shutdown in part on sluggish sales of its refrigerated trailers.

The company said affected workers will be offered a severance package and extended benefits.

Great Dane's Savannah plant is one of eight facilities around the country.

SOUTHWIRE

The Southwire electric wire plant in Watkinsville says it expects to lay off 80 or more of its 140 workers after Jan. 1.

Mike Wiggins, executive vice president for Carrollton-based Southwire, said the company is faced with a plummeting home-building market.

He said the Watkinsville plant will restructure to produce only bare copper wire.

Wiggins said the workers laid off will receive severence pay.
