Data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shows Lake Hartwell is at 642 feet above sea level. That's below a former record set Dec. 24, 1981, by less than an inch.
The lake is more than 17 feet below full pool. Forecasts from the South Carolina Climatology Office and the Corps predict a slightly warmer and drier winter than normal. But, Corps spokesman Billy Birdwell said the lake is not going to run out of water.
Meanwhile, the level of Lake Lanier was 1053.10 early Wednesday morning, 1.29 feet from the all-time low that was set last December 21, 1051.82. Lanier is 17.9 feet below full pool. The level has dropped almost two feet in the last month.
