WEST POINT, Ga. (AP) A worker was killed in a construction accident at the site of the upcoming Kia automobile factory.

Ollie Tate, 47, of Cartersville, was killed around 8 a.m. Tuesday, Troup County Coroner Jeff Cook said.

Tate was working for a subcontractor when a beam fell and apparently hit him, Kia human resources director Randy Jackson said.

Tate was later pronounced dead at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Cook said.

Cook declined to give specifics of the incident, saying only that it was a construction accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating, Cook said.

The 2.4 million-square-foot Kia factory is scheduled to open in November 2009 and will employ 2,500 people directly and many more at five nearby plants that supply parts.

West Point is about 75 miles southwest of Atlanta.
