UNDATED - Experts say the wet weather so far this winter bodes well for spring planting in Georgia - still in the throes of a historic drought - but the summer is another story - and we shouldn't get our hopes up.

"What we see is that the moisture is, maybe, working its way down but it has really not replenished that longterm moisture deficit that has built up over the years," UGA hydrologist Todd Rasmussen told Georgia News Network.

What rain and snow we are getting will probably dampen the ground enough to make for lush lawns and vibrant plants this spring "but July, August and September...we're not getting enough to cover us for that period yet."

It snowed two inches in Gainesville on Saturday and forecasters predict more wet weather for North Georgia this week. Rainfall so far this month is 1.42 inches in Gainesville, which includes moisture from the snows we've had. Normal for the month of January is 4.07 inches. In December, 4.90 inches were recorded.
