ATLANTA (AP) -- The Georgia Aquarium has introduced a new exhibit that features American alligators.

The fresh water exhibit imitates the natural environment of a Georgia swamp.

The American alligator was first listed as an endangered species in 1967 because of loss of habitat and hunting. But the efforts of state and federal wildlife agencies and the creation of large, commercial alligator farms helped save the animals.

In 1987 the animal was removed from the endangered species list after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pronounced the American alligator fully recovered.

With more than eight million gallons of water, the Georgia Aquarium is touted as the world's largest.
