Shaw Industries plant in Fitzgerald to close

<p>All 556 workers at the Shaw Industries manufacturing plant in Fitzgerald will be affected by the plant's closure in November, the state Department of Labor said Friday.</p><p>The agency pledged to help the employees of the carpet fiber plant.</p><p>"The closure of the plant at Shaw Industries will create a difficult situation for the workers and the community," commissioner Michael Thurmond said in a statement.</p><p>Thurmond said the agency will work with company management to offer service for laid-off workers, which could range from unemployment compensation to job-search training.</p><p>The plant had been in operation since 1983.
