GAINESVILLE - The Dragon Boats return to Lake Lanier Saturday and with them a crowd expected to total about 4,000 - and that means the Clarks Bridge boat ramp will be closed most of the day.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will be held all day Saturday, starting around 9:00 and concluding about 5:00.

Competition gets underway at 9:00 and continues through about 3:00.

The opening ceremony, however, will be staged between 12:00 and 1:15. All day, organizers say there will be lots of activities for the kids, including inflatable bouncers, prizes, kites, temporary tattoos and other fun activities.

There is no charge for attending but there will be a charge for parking. It will be $2 for the venue spots and $10 at the Whitmire house just north of the venue.

Organizers say the boat ramp at Clarks Bridge Park will be closed from about 4:00 Saturday morning until late afternoon. Closing the boat ramp for events at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center has been a bone of contention for fishermen. Connie Hagler of the Lake Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club suggests that fishermen and others use the boat ramp at nearby Laurel Park instead.

The boat ramp will also be closed September 22 for the Lanier Racing Series and September 29 for the Youth Racing League Championships.
