A break in the heat wave?

UNDATED - Maybe, just maybe, a break in the heat.

The string of 26 straight 90-degree days in Gaineville continued over the weekend but there's a good chance it will be broken this week - perhaps today.

The forecast calls for highs only in the mid-80s through Wednesday, at least. That's a far cry from the triple-digit readings of the past three weeks.

Meanwhile, for the first time in 18 days, the airport in Gaineville recorded some rain over the weekend. The .39 of an inch brings the monthly total to .97 of an inch.

But the weekend rains came with a price: severe thunderstorms in some areas. Lightning sparked a number of fires in Gwinnett County including one in Buford Sunday at a house neighbors say had been hit by lightning before. In addition, a 15-year-old Alpharetta boy was killed by lightning Sunday while riding his bicycle. (See separate stories).
