DAHLONEGA - A pay increase is in the works for the Mayor and City Council in Dahlonega.

A final vote on the proposal is expected next month.

It would increase the Mayor's salary from $600 a month to $750; for city council members, the increase would be $100, bringing their income to $400 a month.

The recommended pay hikes came from a compensation committee that was formed to study the matter.

According to the minutes of the last council meeting, the committee is also suggesting the retirement benefit be increased from $20 per year of service to $25 per year of service for the Mayor and Council.

It also suggested that "subject to determination by the City Attorney" that it is legal for the mayor and council to be compensated for each level of training achieved through the Georgia Municipal Association's Municipal Training Program as follows: Completion of Level I-$25.00 a month; Completion of Level II-$50.00 a month; Completion of Level III-$75.00 a month.

City Attorney Doug Parks said the increases would have to be part of an amended ordinance.

A motion was made by Gerald Lord to postpone the initial vote until next month, but it died for lack of a second. A motion was made by Sam Norton to ask Parks to draft an ordinance including the committee's recommendations. It passed, with only Lord voting against it.
