UNDATED - Voters in several northeast Georgia counties will help decide who will represent the 10th Congressional district in Washington when they go to the polls in a special election, and several local elections are on tap in the area.

Ten candidates are running for the post left vacant earlier this year by the death of Republican Charlie Norwood. The district stretches from Augusta to Athens and northward to the North Carolina line and includes Banks, Clarke, Columbia, Elbert, Franklin, Greene, Habersham, Hart, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, McDuffie, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Putnam, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, and Wilkes counties, and part of Richmond.

Their are six Republicans in the race: Paul Broun, Bill Green, Mark Myers, Nate Pulliam , Erik Underwood, and Jim Whitehead; three Democrats, James Marlow, Denise Freeman, and Evita Paschall; and, one Libertarian, Jim Sendelbach.

If a runoff is needed, it will be held July 17.

LOCAL RACES

Local issues to be voted on Tuesday in northeast Georgia include a Sunday mixed-drink proposal in Banks County and an extension of a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) in Habersham. In Suwanee, meanwhile, a special city council election is scheduled to fill the vacancy left when Alan Landers moved out of town. Two candidates - Andy Duncan and Kevin McOmber - are seeking the post.
