GAINESVILLE - Get ready for some major overnight delays on I-985 near the Oakwood interchange work.

Workers will begin removing the old Atlanta Highway Bridge starting Monday night. The work will continue nightly - starting at 8:00 - through probably the rest of the week.

One lane of traffic on the Interstate will be closed during the work which will continue through 5:00 each morning.

"(The bridge) will be taken apart piece by piece," according to DOT Communications Officer Teri Pope. "As crews work over the interstate we will close that lane and a tarp will be under the bridge to catch any falling debris. One lane northbound and one lane southbound of I-985 will be closed...for this bridge demolition. We hope to get it all done by Friday morning. Just know that each night next week that weather allows one lane of I-985 under the SR 13 (Atlanta Highway) Bridge will be closed in each direction."

The speed limit on 985 within the construction project limits, north of the Elachee Bridge to about 1 mile south of Exit 16, has been lowered to 60 miles per hour.
