HARTWELL - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is celebrating the completion of a $33 million upgrade of the Hartwell Dam power plant.

Corps officials say the refurbishment will increase capacity of each of four generators by 30 percent.

Corps of Engineers officials, along with local guests, will celebrate the completion of the project this morning at 10:00.

Plans for the work began to take shape in 1993 and Congress provided initial funding in 1995. Construction began in early 1997.

Four of Hartwell's five generators were refurbished to increase the output of each from 66 megawatts to 85.5 megawatts. (The fifth generator remains rated at 90 megawatts and did not require refurbishment.)

This will provide approximately $3.3 million of added annual benefits over the next 35 years, according to the Corps, and will also "greatly improve" the reliability of the powerplant's ability to provide "constant power on demand" through the Southeastern Power Administration (SEPA) to local utility companies.
