GAINESVILLE - A man who served as a Superior Court judge in Gainesville for 23 years will be memorialized next month.

That's when the local bar association will unveil a monument to A.R. Kenyon at the Hall County Courthouse.

Judge Kenyon helped found the first Halfway House in Georgia, the first shelter for battered women, and one of the first House Arrest programs in the state.

After his retirement, he focused on environmental issues, particularly protecting the water quality of Lake Lanier. From 1989 until 1995, he chaired the Hall County Grand Jury Committee on Lake Lanier.

As member of the state legislature in the 1940s, Kenyon was a champion of civil rights, calling for all people to have the right to vote, regardless of skin color.

The monument will be dedicated May 1, Law Day, at noon.
