Thousands of listeners responding to a local radio promotion offering free admission to Six Flags Over Georgia on Thursday morning jammed traffic on a major Atlanta interstate in both directions for hours and had children walking down the highway to squeeze into the park before the gates closed.

Cars began lining up as early as 2 a.m. for "Ditch Day," sponsored by radio station Q100's "The Bert Show," which airs from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and broadcast live from Six Flags. The station bought out the park from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg.

"When we got to the park and saw how many people were waiting in line, we understood that it would be a popular promotion for Q100 listeners," Goldberg said.

By 6:15, the parking lots were already full and the park closed its gates, since about 7,400 people were already inside.

To beat the deadline, some parents let their children out of the car to walk down Interstate 20, but Six Flags turned those people away, saying people had to arrive in cars to take advantage of the offer. The park does not allow people to walk up to the gates for entry for safety reasons, Goldberg said.
