The former son-in-law of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin has been sentenced to life in prison after a federal judge said he was involved in one of the biggest drug dealing operations he had ever seen.

Tremayne Graham pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors, but lied several times to investigators and failed a lie-detector test, U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd said.

Graham, 32, also threatened a witness during his sentencing hearing last week, pointing at a witness with his fingers shaped like a gun, then pointing at his heart, Lloyd said.

At the time he was charged in April 2004, Graham was married to Franklin's daughter, Kai Franklin Graham.

Graham started dealing drugs after he met dealer Scott King in the early 1990s while Graham was a student at Clemson University, prosecutors said.

King, 37, also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nearly 25 years in prison.

The two moved to Atlanta and became significant drug dealers, selling more than 500 kilograms of cocaine in South Carolina, Lloyd said.

During the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Henry M. Herlong Jr. described the drug operation ran by Graham, King, 32-year-old Jerry Davis and others as "one of the biggest" he had ever seen. Davis was sentenced to nearly 40 years in prison.

The drugs would be shipped from Los Angeles to Atlanta by private jets, tractor-trailers and parcel post, then packaged and sent all along the East Coast, authorities said.

Investigators began breaking up the drug ring after an informant involved with a different dealer delivered drugs to a Greenville house where King stashed drugs, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Jay Rajaee said.

That informant and his girlfriend were killed in 2004, but no one has been charged in their deaths, according to court records.

___

HASH(0x1cdbd10)
