South Gwinnett defeat Douglass to advance

DULUTH, Ga. - Antoinette Howard had 12 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists to lead South Gwinnett to a 72-54 victory over Douglass in the semifinals of the Class AAAAA Georgia High School Association state championships on Thursday.<br> <br> Howard, a 5-foot-11 Florida signee, teamed with guard Alex Winchell and seven other seniors to help the Comets (29-2) advance to the final for the second straight year.<br> <br> Winchell, a Memphis signee, scored 13 points and hit two 3-pointers, one of them in the third quarter when South Gwinnett outscored Douglass 24-14. Mandi Dudish scored a team-high 15 for the Comets, who have won 29 straight games after opening the season with two losses in a Florida tournament.<br> <br> In the 2006 state finals, South Gwinnett lost 65-55 to Class AAAAA powerhouse and country rival Collins Hill, which plays Stephenson in the late game.<br> <br> Morgan Jennings scored 16 points for Douglass (23-6). Tanesha Hudson had 12 points and Khaalidah Miller 10 for the Astros.
