A score of 500 is required for seniors to walk at graduation. The state of Georgia determines Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status from the number of students who score 516 or higher. The Platinum Pride card is given to all 11th graders who make the AYP requirement on their first attempt at the test.
"It's really great because it give the kids benefits for taking care of business the first time," said GHS Principal Mike Kemp. "We have about 90 businesses attached to it now, with discounts with food, discounts with clothing stores, opportunities for them to get in free at all Gainesville High School events."
The program has generated a lot of enthusiasm from students and faculty. Banners adorn the walls of the school urging them to make AYP.
"Gainesville High School is all decorated, just like we're going to an athletic state championship," said Gainesville School Board Chairwoman Lee Highsmith. "The kids are so excited about it. All the teachers have t-shirts that celebrate 516, and the school is all decked out to support the kids."
The t-shirts and banners around Gainesville High School proclaim that AYP stands for "Are You Platinum?" Junior Kortney Whites says that she certainly is.
"I'm ready. I'm really ready to be platinum," she said. "Upcoming seniors, we have to represent. We are going to be the first class to make 516 on everything, the first time around. That is our goal. We are going to achieve it."
Kemp said earning the card is only the beginning. Students must remain in good academic standing and maintain good behavior to keep the benefits.
