GAINESVILLE - The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has passed a resolution opposing a state Senate bill dealing with guns at the workplace.

At the urging of Gainesville businessman and chamber board member Phillip Wilheit, the board passed a resolution Thursday in opposition to Senate Bill (SB) 43.

That bill, which has the backing of the National Rifle Association (NRA), would prohibit employers from keeping their workers from bringing guns to work and leaving them in their locked cars.

Wilheit, who said he is an NRA member, said its not a gun rights issue. It's a workplace issue, he said.

"I have a right to have a smoke-free workplace, an alcohol-free workplace and a gun-free workplace."

Wilheit is president of Wilheit Packaging.

The vote by the chamber board was unanimous.
