Reid, Marshall win Big South awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - High Point forward Arizona Reid was named the Big South player of the year Monday, while Winthrop&#39;s Gregg Marshall was honored as the league&#39;s top coach.<br> <br> Reid, a junior, was second in the league in scoring at 21.6 points per game and led the conference with 9.6 rebounds in helping the Panthers to their first 20-win season (21-9) since the school moved to Division I eight years ago. Reid also led the league with 13 double-doubles.<br> <br> He&#39;s joined on the all-conference first team by Liberty&#39;s Larry Blair, Reggie Williams of VMI and Michael Jenkins and Craig Bradshaw of Winthrop.<br> <br> Marshall, who won coach of the year honors for the fourth time, led the Eagles to the first perfect conference record in Big South history. Winthrop (25-4, 14-0) has also won non-conference games at Mississippi State, Old Dominion and Missouri State and is the top seed for this week&#39;s league tournament.<br> <br> Coastal Carolina guard Joshua Mack, who averaged 12.3 points per game, was named freshman of the year, while VMI sophomore Travis Holmes was named the league&#39;s top defensive player in voting by the conference&#39;s coaches, sports information directors and select media members.<br> <br> Jack Leasure of Coastal Carolina was named scholar athlete of the year for the second time.
