BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- New Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has hired Southern Miss linebackers coach Dave Wommack as his new defensive coordinator, a newspaper web site reported.

Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower confirmed the hiring after the Golden Eagles went through a practice in preparation for Saturday's Papajohns.com Bowl, according to an article at www.clarionledger.com.

Wommack spent seven years on Bower's staff from 1994-2000 and returned to Hattiesburg just weeks before the 2007 season after spending the 2005-06 season at South Carolina.

Wommack served as defensive co-coordinator for the Golden Eagles midway through the season after Jay Hopson was diagnosed and treated for cancer.
