GAINESVILLE - The Mayors' Motorcade is a holiday tradition all across Georgia - and Gainesville is no exception.

The 2007 edition rolled out of town Friday morning with a big send-off at the Gainesville-Hall County Senior Center.

The Georgia Municipal Association began the Mayors' Motorcade in 1958 at the request of Gov. Ernest Vandiver as a way of providing holiday gifts for the patients of Georgia's mental health and retardation hospitals.

Without the Mayors' Christmas Motorcade, the staff at these hospitals have said many of their clients would not receive a gift for the holidays.

The send-off in Gainesville include Santa Claus... who arrived atop a city fire truck.
