GAINESVILLE - The next step in plans to turn Chestnut Mountain Elementary School into Hall County's first charter school comes Monday night.

That's when school officials will hold a public hearing on proposed changes in school attendance zones to accommodate the plans for Chestnut Mountain.

The hearing will be at 6:00 at Flowery Branch High School. Prior to that, for one hour, you'll be able to look at maps of the proposed changes, which would take effect at the beginning of the 2008-09 school-year.

No official board action will be taken at the hearing.

School system spokesman Gordon Higgins said the opening of the new Chestnut Mountain facility on Union Church Road (currently under construction) will "create opportunities" to relieve over crowded conditions at Spout Springs and Friendship, both of which have been expanded to capacity. With a student capacity of about 900, the new elementary school will be the largest ever built by the county school system.

The three schools will be affected as follows:

*Chestnut Mountain will include all of the current Chestnut Mountain district plus a portion from the current Spout Springs district
*Spout Springs will lose a portion of their current district to the new Chestnut Mountain, but add a portion from Friendship.
*Friendship will lose a portion of their district to Spout Springs

By making these changes, the Board will "make the most effective use of available space, giving much needed relief to Spout Springs Elementary and Friendship Elementary," Higgins said.
