CLARKESVILLE - After a 33-year career with the Habersham County Schools, Superintendent Judy Forbes announced she is retiring.

"There just comes a point in time when there comes an opportunity to explore other things and see what the next phase in life is about," said Forbes.

She said she was proud of what the school system has accomplished while she has served as the superintendent.

"I hope that they will remember me as the hometown person who tried to work to make this school system better than it has ever been," she said.

Dr. Forbes will step down June 30. She has agreed, however, to be available to the school system through December 2008, if needed.

"I would never leave this system high and dry," Forbes said. "I love it far too much, and I love this community, and I want us to have the best that we can possibly have here."

She made the announcement at a recent Habersham Board of Education meeting.
