OAKWOOD- In the finale for both teams Friday night, the Johnson-Gainesville Knights avenged their 17-7 loss last year to the Pickens County Dragons by pounding them 27-6 at Billy Ellis Memorial Stadium.
It was senior night for Johnson, but it was a freshman running back, Montevious Rucker, who stole the show, bullying his way to three touchdowns, with the final touchdown coming a one-yard run on fourth down. That score put the Knights up 27-6 with 11:19 to go in the game, and sealed the fate of the Dragons.
Rucker scored his first touchdown on a three-yard plunge with 28 seconds to go in the first quarter to put Johnson up 7-0.
Rucker finished the game with only 35 yards rushing on 13 carries, but whenever the Knights needed a big play inside of the 20-yard line, they jumped on the back of the broad-shouldered freshman.
Pickens answered Johnson's first score with a touchdown of its own. Quarterback R.J. Harrington found tight end Raymond Bennett on a fourth-and-goal in the back of the end zone for a three-yard touchdown reception with 7:48 to go in the second quarter. The extra point was blocked, but Pickens appeared to be back in the game trailing only 7-6.
On its next possession, Johnson proceeded to chew up 7:41 on the clock with a 17-play drive that culminated with a one-yard touchdown run by Rucker. The freshman dove over the pile to score his second touchdown of the game, putting the Knights up 14-6 with only one second on the clock before halftime.
Pickens received the ball after halftime but could never get any sort of offensive rhythm going, running only eight plays in the third quarter. The Dragons could only muster 17 total yards for the quarter.
Not to be outdone by a freshman, Johnson senior running back Omar Madrigal ended his high school career in style, leading the Knights in rushing with 87 yards on 16 carries.
Harrington led the Dragons in rushing and finished the game with 38 yards on nine carries, but he had a tough game passing as the Johnson defense pressured him into three interceptions.
