For those of you who are smugly thinking you are physically fit ... thinking you don't need to go to the free health fair the day-after-tomorrow ... let me share something I learned attending the 2030 planning meetings. First, a question: would you consider basketball Hall-of-famer Dominique Wilkins to be about as physically fit as anybody in your neighborhood? Well, it turns out he has Type 2 diabetes. Dominique Wilkins, the big guy, will be the kickoff speaker for the huge all-day HealthSmart health fair this Wednesday, October 24, at the Georgia Mountain Center. He will talk about his new diabetes prevention initiative that he developed with former U. S. House speaker Newt Gingrich. They call it "Nique and Newt's full court press on diabetes." He will share the steps he is taking to beat his Type 2 diabetes, and how you can prevent you and your children from becoming diabetic. A couple of other things should ... in my judgement ...push you to attend this health fair. First, the Centers for Disease Control predicts if current trends continue, one of every three children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes ... one in every three. And secondly, diabetes, hypertension and cardio vascular disease currently account for 75% of healthcare costs. These are big-time statistics, but they point their finger directly at you and me, for these are problems we can do something about if we will. Finding a program for you and your family to get fit and stay fit is aimed at preventing physical problems before it is too late. May I suggest you find time to attend the HealthSmart health fair, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., this Wednesday, October 24 at the Georgia Mountain Center. I'll see you there.
This is Gordon Sawyer and may the wind always be at your back.
