ATLANTA - While citing significant gains in voter registration among Hispanics in Gwinnett County, a group of organizations is stepping up its efforts statewide.

A group of multi-cultural organizations aims to make a difference by building stronger alliances among diverse communities across the state.

Recent changes in state election laws and an earlier 2008 primary election date are singled-out as the driving forces for the campaign.

Jerry Gonzalez of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials says the number of registered Hispanic voters in Gwinnett has increased from 803 in January 2003 to more than 9,000 this year.

The campaign also aims to increase the number of African-Americans and Asians on the state's voter registration lists.
