NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The NCAA granted a medical redshirt Friday to Vanderbilt offensive tackle Brian Stamper, giving him a fifth year after back surgery ended his senior season.
Stamper was a co-captain in 2006 and was a starter at the beginning of the season at left tackle. But he needed surgery in October, ending his season.
``I'm very happy with the decision, both for Brian and his family, and also for our program,'' Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said.
Stamper is a three-year starter from Windermere, Fla., who started at right tackle as a freshman in 2003, and he was named All-Southeastern Conference in 2005. The NCAA ruling gives Vandy the chance to return all five starters on the offensive line.
