GAINESVILLE - The new Hall County YMCA building will be named for prominent Gainesville businessman and philanthropist Jim Walters, who provided the seed money for the project.

"Jim gave the funds to make this project happen," said Hall YMCA CEO Mike Brown. "The new Y will now be the J.A. Walters Family YMCA."

Groundbreaking was held was held Thursday at White Sulphur Road and Georgia 365, although grading has been underway for about three weeks.

Brown said the 52,000-square-feet first phase will consist of "two indoor pools, a health and wellness center, a gymnasium, locker rooms, child care center, chapel, office space and (playing) fields."

He says construction is expected to be finished by next September.
