Holiday lake activity down

GAINESVILLE - Only two boating-under-the-influence cases were made on Lake Lanier during what was described as an unusually quiet summer holiday weekend.

Rangers patrolling the lake during the long Labor Day weekend say activity was down, perhaps because of the mild, wet weather - and the low water levels.

The lake is more than eight feet below full pool because of the drought - making boating a bit more hazardous and leaving little, if any water, in some swim areas.

There were no reports of boating accidents - compared to two each for the Memorial Day and July 4 holidays.

There was one drowning. (See separate story.)
