The high reached 96 in Gainesville Tuesday - eleven degrees above average for the date, but two degrees shy of the record for the date, which was set in 1942.
Dangerously hot weather is expected for most of the rest of the week across north and central Georgia. Temperatures near 100 are likely in some places again Wednesday with the heat index approaching 105, possible 108 at times.
Only Augusta - where the high was 100 - reported an official reading in the triple digits Tuesday.
