GAINESVILLE - Gov. Perdue is expected to be among those testifying in Gainesville Tuesday at a hearing on the tri-state water war and its impact on Lake Lanier.

The session will be conducted by Georgia Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, and U.S. Representative Nathan Deal of Gainesville.

As we first reported two weeks ago, the hearing will begin at 10:00 at Riverside Military Academy, and the general public will be given a chance to offer comment.

Organizers hope it will shed more light on how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages Lake Lanier, along with the Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa and the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basins.

It could also lead to a new round of negotiations among the governors of the three states to settle the water war, which began in the 1990s. Sen. Isakson said the purpose is to "get all the issues out on the table and get people talking."

Gov. Perdue said last week he plans to meet with Alabama Gov. Bob Riley in Columbus August 14 to discuss the matter.
