LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Graham Harrell will be the starting quarterback for Texas Tech when the 25th-ranked Red Raiders open their college football season Saturday against S-M-U. He'll become the first underclassman to lead Tech's wide-open offense since 2001.

Harrell owns the Texas high school career records for yards passing and touchdowns and had been favored to beat out redshirt freshman Chris Todd. Tech coach Mike Leach confirmed today that Harrell had won the job.

Now, Harrell will get his chance to lead the nation in passing, as the past four starters at Tech have done as seniors.

Harrell passed for 392 yards and three touchdowns in five games as a backup last year.

(Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press.
