<p>Southern Family Markets announced it will close 13 stores in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi on Aug. 12 as part of a plan to streamline the grocery chain.</p><p>The Birmingham-based company said Thursday it will close Alabama stores in Clanton, Dothan, Meridianville and Moulton. In Georgia, stores will close in Athens, Clayton, Cornelia, Dublin, East Ellijay, Greensboro and Macon, which has two stores. One in West Point, Miss., near the Alabama line will also close.</p><p>According to a statement, the company decided to focus resources on the remaining 75 stores.</p><p>"By focusing our resources on our strongest markets, Southern Family Markets will strengthen its business, enabling us to provide the very best in customer service," president Bill White said.</p><p>The United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which represents some of the employees in Southern Family Market stores, will work with the company to help workers affected by the closings. Southern Family Markets is an affiliate of food distributor C&S Wholesale Grocers of Keene, N.H.</p>
