FLOWERY BRANCH - It will be another two weeks - not this week - before a public hearing in Flowery Branch on annexation of a rock quarry.

Flowery Branch City Clerk Melissa Cain said Wednesday morning there has been "some confusion" regarding the city's public hearings this month.

Cain says the hearing for the LaFarge Quarry annexation is scheduled July 26 - not this Thursday.

EARLIER ACTION

In April 2005, LaFarge sought to expand its hours of operation but Hall County Commission rejected the request. The quarry is located on Friendship Road.

The vote was 3-1 against Deborah Lynn's motion which included allowing LaFarge to operate until 9:00 P.M. between March and October.

LaFarge spokesman Wayne Fears urged commissioners at the time to find a balance to satisfy his company and the home owners that would allow the quarry and asphalt plant to meet government paving contracts.

Fears presented sound measurements which he claimed clearly indicated quarry noise levels were acceptable.

Opponents repeatedly complained of the noise and dust from the plant during the emotionally charged hearing.
