Schofield spoke at Chestatee High School on the first day of New Teacher Orientation which continues Wednesday.
"We focused on the word 'special'," Schofield said in an interview after his speech, "(telling them) that they are special and we've done a nationwide search for the best and the brightest classroom teachers that we can find."
The daylong meetings include presentations on everything from the history of the Hall County School System, personnel issues, classroom management, and gang identification and awareness.
Schofield said he told the group "basic competency is important but we have the expectations in Hall County that we'll also teach toward those regular skills, particular for our most able learners."
The first day of class for Hall County students is August 4.
