Cingular to expand coverage in Utah

<p>Wireless communications giant Cingular has announced plans to extend and upgrade coverage in Utah by the end of the year.</p><p>The cellular telephone company, which has 55.8 million customers, said Tuesday that it will spend $130 million to construct 90 new cellular sites, providing additional coverage to areas around the state including Logan, Moab, Ogden, St. George and Bullfrog Marina at Lake Powell.</p><p>The project is expected to employ 25 contractors, said Dewey Garner, company director of sales for Utah and southern Idaho.</p><p>The Utah plans are part of a larger nationwide project to invest $6 billion to the Cingular network, including constructing 3,500 new cellular sites by the end of this year.</p><p>Since last September, Atlanta-based Cingular has already added seven new cellular sites in Salt Lake City, said company spokeswoman Anne Marshall, and expects to have 24 more operating by 2007.</p><p>In Utah County, six of 20 new sites are already operating. Eight of 17 sites for Ogden and Cache Valley area are also up. The remaining sites in those areas are expected to be operational by year's end.</p><p>Meanwhile, Cingular said it will extend their new high-speed data network next week, giving users in Ogden to Provo and Tooele and Park City wireless access to the Internet via laptop computers.</p><p>The company, which merged operations with AT&T Wireless in 2004, launched the network in Salt Lake City in December.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x1cd9aa4)</p>
