The 762 area code will be assigned to all new customers to provide more available telephone numbers in the 706 area code region. Existing customers will not have to change their phone numbers or area codes.
All customers with either a 706 or 762 area code will have to dial all 10 digits to complete a call, even in their local calling area, starting Monday. It is not necessary to dial a "1" or "0" when dialing local calls.
The 706 area code includes - among others - the cities of Augusta, Columbus, Cornelia, Dahlonega, Dalton, LaGrange, Newnan and Toccoa.
Customers who live in the 706 area code should prepare by taking the following steps, according to Alltel:
*Reprogram all stored local telephone numbers to include the area code for services such as call forwarding, speed calling, call selector and call block.
*Reprogram fax machines, modems, Internet connections, PBX systems, wireless phones or any equipment with automatic dialing features.
*Customers with security systems should contact the vendor to determine reprogramming needs.
