Carter,a former Georgia Bulldog who played for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets, signed a one-year contract with an option for 2007. He will be at Alouettes' training camp in May.
Carter, from Decatur, Ga., signed to play for Georgia Tech but gave up his scholarship to play minor league baseball. After two seasons in the minors he signed with Georgia and was the Bulldogs' starting quarterback before entering the NFL draft in 2001.
``I'm proud to join the Montreal Alouettes,'' Carter said in a statement. ``This is a great opportunity for me to do what I love best, which is to play football.''
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Carter had his best season with the Cowboys in 2003, throwing for 3,302 yards and 17 touchdowns. He left Dallas the following season to join the Jets, where he threw for 498 yards and three touchdowns in seven games.
Carter was chosen in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft. He has a career completion rate of 56.5 per cent, with 6,337 yards, 32 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.
