ATLANTA - The state has taken another step toward the long-planned widening of a stretch
of Winder Highway south of Gainesville.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has begun taking bids on the 7.5-mile project which will involve the section of road between Georgia Highway 211 and Cedar Ridge Drive. The work is expected to be finished by the end of 2008.

At a meeting in Gainesville in early 2005, Gainesville GDOT District Engineere Russell McMurray estimated the cost of the project at $28 million.

Bids will be opened April 21.
