GAINESVILLE - New Gainesville Knights basketball player Larry Topps is no stranger to Fair Street Elementary School. A former student back in the 1990s, Topps remembers being a little smaller back then and not having to duck to get into the lunchroom. He also remembers where the office is.

"I was always in trouble," he said chuckling as the Knights visited the school Wednesday to meet future fans and promote their upcoming season. Topps graduated from Gainesville High in 2001.

"But it's neat to be able to come back and tell kids I went here and that they can make their dreams come true. It's fun to see the kids get excited about it."

The Knights begin their second season in Gainesville and will open the 2006 season at the Gainesville High gym against Griffin on Friday.

Second-grader Kamesha Dukes played 20 questions with several members of the team.

"It's fun to see them. They're so tall," she said. "I think I'll go to some games this year."

Tavare Watson, also a second-grader, went to games last year and was glad to get to meet them.

"That was cool," he said. "I hope they come back."

Topps, however, said it was nice to come to the school and know that the only time he would go to the office was to check-in.

"It brought back some memories of when I was here and I had a good time," he said. "The office still looks the same and it's good to know I won't have to go there. I'm going to stay out of trouble while I'm here."
