UNDATED - If some state lottery outlets in northeast Georgia notice a drop in their sales starting today, they can blame North Carolina.

The Tarheel State today becomes one of the last in the south to implement a state lottery - officially known as the North Carolina Education Lottery. And, many of its residents have been Georgia lottery customers. They've been crossing the state line - many on a regular basis - since the Georgia Lottery began, buying tickets just inside Georgia. Proceeds from Georgia's lottery also go to education.

Outlets in Rabun, Towns, Union and Fannin counties have been the major beneficiaries of North Carolina lottery players. One of the most popular with them is the State Line Package Store on U.S. 441 in Dillard in Rabun County.
