GAINESVILLE - Two people with strong ties to Elachee Nature Center were honored by the Gainesville Rotary Club Monday night with its Man and Woman of the Year awards.

Dr. Robert Bruner and Rosemary Dodd received the awards at the club's annual banquet at Chattahoochee Country Club.

Both currently serve on Elachee's advisory board. Dodd is a co-founder of Elachee and Bruner for years was in charge of the Bean House, an Elachee fund-raiser at what is now Mule Camp Market, the downtown Gainesville fall festival that is held each October.

He was also singled out for his years of work with Boy Scouts. Bruner has been a scoutmaster for 18 years and has watched as nearly 100 of his young charges achieved scouting's highest rank, Eagle Scout. Eleven received their awards just a week ago in a ceremony at First United Methodist Church.

Dodd was characterized as someone "who becomes a best friend to everyone she meets" as she was cited for her commitment to her family, her church and her community. Dodd's list of accomplishments also includes co-founder and charter board member of Gainesville Ballet, co-founder of the Gainesville Children's Theatre (now WonderQuest), founding board member of the North Georgia Community Foundation and founding vice president of the Northeast Georgia History Center. Dodd has also served on a number of boards of directors related to the arts in Gainesville-Hall County.

Also Monday night, Rotary's Sidney O. Smith Award was presented to Bill St. Clair. That is an award that goes to a Rotarian and is given a club member who "consistently portrays an ongoing respect for Rotary." The winner each year is chosen by past recipients. It has been awarded each year since 1970 in memory of Sidney O. Smith, Sr., a founding member of the Gainesville Rotary Club.
