Barring unexpected developments this weekend, Georgia will play Virginia Tech in the Dec. 30 Chick-fil-A Bowl in the Georgia Dome.

The bowl, formerly known as the Peach Bowl, will announce its teams on Sunday.

"We will have our SEC team in attendance and our ACC team on the telephone," said Chick-fil-A spokesman Matt Garvey on Friday.

Added Garvey: "If everything goes the way we think, it looks like our best possible matchup would have Virginia Tech against Georgia."

The Chick-fil-A plans also are of interest to Georgia Tech. If the Yellow Jackets lose in the ACC championship game against Wake Forest on Saturday, they would be invited to the Gator Bowl.

Georgia Tech hopes to earn an Orange Bowl berth by beating Wake Forest, but with a loss its bowl options were the Chick-fil-A and Gator bowls.

Garvey called plans for his bowl matchup "the worst-kept secret in Atlanta," but even on Friday the Virginia Tech-Georgia matchup was not a certainty.

For the Atlanta bowl to invite Georgia, the Southeastern Conference must have two teams in BCS bowls. Louisiana State is expected to join the winner of Saturday's Florida-Arkansas SEC championship game as SEC teams in BCS bowls.

The Florida-Arkansas loser, Auburn and Tennessee are expected to land in the Capital One, Outback and Cotton bowls. But if LSU doesn't make the final BCS cut, it would affect the rest of the bowl picture and possibly send either Auburn or Tennessee to the Chick-fil-A bowl.

Georgia (8-4) lost four of five games before it salvaged its season with a strong finish, beating No. 5 Auburn and No. 16 Georgia Tech.

Georgia last played in the Peach Bowl in 1998, when it beat Virginia 35-33.

Virginia Tech (10-2) closed its regular season with a win over Virginia and a No. 14 ranking.
