Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin's mother dies

<p>Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin's mother died Tuesday morning at an Atlanta hospital, officials at City Hall said.</p><p>The mayor's mother, Ruth Lyons White, 85, died at Emory Healthcare, according to a statement posted on the City of Atlanta's Web site. Beverly Isom, the mayor's director of communications, said she did not know what White was being treated for at the time of her death, and referred questions to Emory Healthcare.</p><p>Hospital spokesman Lance Skelly said the hospital does not release patient information.</p><p>White was born in Asheville, N.C., and grew up in Washington, the statement said. She raised her daughter in Philadelphia. The retired educator moved to Atlanta a few years ago.</p><p>She is survived by her daughter, two sisters, three grandchildren, several nieces and other family members.</p><p>Her family has asked that donations be made in her name to the Howard University School of Education.</p><p>Funeral arrangements were pending Tuesday.</p>
